EPA Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP)
Lead Worker (CDPH) - English or Spanish
Description:
This 3-day class includes: introduction to the history of lead,  how lead is used, the health effects of lead poisoning, lead regulations, hazard recognition and control, medical surveillance, medical removal, personal protective measures, respirators, clothing and hygiene, work practices during abatement.

Lead Sampling Technician (CDPH)
Description:
This 1-day class provides Sampling Technicians with the basic information they need to perform their work. This includes background on health risks of lead; how to conduct a visual assessment and visual examination; how to collect dust wipe, paint chip, and soil samples plus an overview of how to use an XRF analyzer. Sampling Techs must also attend an additional 8-hour manufacturer's training before using an XRF. (NOTE: Sampling Technicians are required to work under the supervision of a certified lead Inspector/Risk Assessor.)

Lead Supervisor/Project Monitor (CDPH).(English and Spanish available)
Description: (Prerequisite: 3-day Worker)
This 2-day class includes: a review of the history of lead, facts about how lead is used, the health effects of lead poisoning, lead regulations, the roles and responsibilities of the supervisor and the project monitor, state certification procedures, liability and insurance issues, abatement and interim control techniques, lead regulations, contract specs, supervision techniques, sampling soil, dust and air, clearance testing, waste disposal, cost estimating and recordkeeping.

You must also apply and pay a fee to the State of California ($75 per year each for supervisor and/or project monitor). For more info see State Certification.

Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor (CDPH)
Description:
This 5-day class includes: introduction to the history of lead, facts about how lead is used, the health effects of lead poisoning, lead regulations, the roles and responsibilities of the inspector and assessor, state certification procedures, inspection and assessment protocols, clearance testing, visual inspections, radiation safety, interpretation of sampling results, report writing, interim controls, hazard control options, abatement methods, liability and insurance issues, and hands-on exercises in taking dust, soil, and paint chip samples.

5 days, 8AM to 5PM   (40 contact hours)
Who should take the Inspector/Assessor course:
Persons wishing to perform inspections, risk assessments and clearance testing, grant program managers

General Lead Refresher (CDPH)
(For: Inspectors, Risk Assessors, Supervisors, Proj Monitors)

Lead Worker Refresher (CDPH) English and Spanish available
(For: Workers and Supervisors)
Description:
Continuing education class for workers.

1 day, 8:30AM to 4:30PM  (7 contact hours)
Who should take Worker Refresher class:
This continuing education class is required every two years for California certified lead-related construction Workers and Supervisors who should take this class about 4 months BEFORE their certification renewal date. (Note: Supervisors may take either the Worker or General Refresher.)

Lead Awareness
Description:
This class provides the basics of how to work safely around lead paint.  Class content:

- What is Lead?
- Health Effects
- Laws, Regulations and Standards
- Personal Protective Equip
- Identifying LBP Hazards
- Lead Safe Work Practices

This is the minimum training required by HUD for contractors and their crews performing "interim controls" and working for jurisdictions receiving federal funds.  This class does NOT count towards certification training.

8:00AM to 4:00PM
Who should take this class:
Contractors and their crews who will do work for cities, counties and other agencies receiving federal funding.  City, County and Agency personnel who want to understand what is involved with "lead safe work practices."
 
NOTE: Contractors who perform "abatement" (paint removal, component replacement, encapsulation, and enclosure) must be state certified.  California certification for workers is a 24 hour course and for supervisors 40 hours.

Contractors should check with each city, county, agency they work for or wish to work for to determine the level of training each requires.  Some jurisdictions require more training (i.e. certification) than this course provides.

Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Initial Class
(EPA Accredited)
Description:
This 1-day (8-hr) class explains how to comply with EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. Subjects covered include: health effects, regulations, lead safe work practices, containment, cleaning & record keeping. After passing an end-of-class exam, students receive RRP Certificates.

Regulatory Authority: 40 CFR 745.90(a)(1) & 40 CFR Subpart L

To become a certified renovator, an individual must successfully complete the appropriate course accredited by EPA or by a State or Tribal program that is authorized by EPA. The course completion certificate serves as proof of certification. EPA renovator certification allows the certified individual to perform renovations in any State or Indian Tribal area that does not have a separate authorized State or Tribal renovation program.

Who should take the RRP-Initial (RRP) class:
Contractors who work in pre-1978 housing and who might disturb painted surfaces while doing plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, tile, window replacement, landscaping, repairs, construction, renovation, remodeling, HVAC, demolition, plus many, other jobs. The RRP rule applies to people who work for rental property owners, schools, and day care providers as well as non-profits and government agencies. Learn more at: RRP Rule

Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Refresher
(EPA Accredited)
Description:
This 1/2-day (4-hr) class explains how to comply with EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. Subjects covered include: regulations, lead safe work practices, cleaning & record keeping. After passing an end-of-class exam, students receive RRP Certificates.

Regulatory Authority: 40 CFR 745.90(a)(2) & 40 CFR Subpart L

Individuals who have successfully completed an accredited abatement worker or supervisor course, or individuals who have successfully completed an EPA, HUD, or EPA/HUD model renovation training course may take an accredited refresher renovator training course in lieu of the initial renovator training course to become a certified renovator.

1/2 day, 8:00AM to 12:00PM or 1:00PM to 5:00PM  (4 contact hours)
Who should take the RRP Refresher class:
